Oamaru was a gem of a find – a historic gold-mining and quarrying town renowned for its well-preserved heritage buildings. The Victorian precinct is particularly note-worthy for its Victorian and Industrial Steam themed buildings. In other words, kids, this is a Steampunk town! 

Filled with all manner of little shops, curiosities, costumes, and bric-a-brac, I spent an afternoon in heaven. Even their playground was Steampunk themed!

Not only is the Victorian precinct worth a visit, there is also a lovely park and a place on the water where in the evenings you can watch the Little Blue Penguins come ashore. Of course humans have monetized it by building a platform and selling tickets, but you need not splash out to see the little guys splash in! Just pop around to the pier wall and get a free view 🙂

From Oamaru I headed down to Moeraki to see the famous Moeraki Boulders – large, spherical rocks on the beach. Yep. Another stop to look at rocks. However, again, worth it.They were actually quite large.If you visit, be sure to check the tide times! 

After Moeraki, I was off to Dunedin! Dunedin is a cool college town with some seriously sweet street art. I did a little self-guided jaunt and came to the conclusion more places need to take street art to this level! The talent here is seriously bonkers.
